Detroit Marathon Medal 2013

The Detroit Marathon has officially released its medal for the year, with the featured car being a 2013 Camaro, instead of the usual rotation of classic cars.  If you happen to follow the Detroit Marathon on facebook, it seems to me that this decision is currently not going over too well.  Most of the comments have been overwhelmingly negative.  I think a good number of people, myself included, believe this to be more of a tacky advertisment than anything.  I've also seen a few comments that seem beyond reason, asking if they can defer their entry to next year over this, or are threatening to not bother registering.

2013 Detroit Marathon Medal

Personally, I think that's taking things a little too far, but what do you guys think?  I'd like to hear some feedback.  It seems like messing with people's medals is about as risky of an endeavor as scorning a woman, poking a bear or a hornets next, or signing the Brian Jonestown Massacre to your record label.

For me it might be a little less motivation or excitement at the finish, but I can't see it pushing me off of doing it completely.  Though if I were on the fence between Detroit and Chicago, like some people in this midwest region may be, I could see it bumping me to Chicago.  I don't know, I'm not sure it would even matter, as we all know the Marathon is going to sell out anyway.  If you have fat people like me running them now, then pretty much everyone is a candidate for signing up.

  1. While I normally could care less, I mean I'm running a race with a ridiculous bunny coming out of an Easter egg medal next weekend, I do think switching up the car for something modern over classic for Detroit is an idiot move.

  3. I like it! I like that it actually looks a little different. I hate that the medal looks basically the same every year. I like the gold chevy logo, it stands out, advert or not.

  4. The one question that popped into my head when I saw that medal was, "Detroit still makes cars?!"

As far as the bling itself? I have three identical medals for each of the three Salinas Valley Half Marathons I've run. The only thing that differentiates them from each other is the ribbon. Each is a different color and the year of the race printed on it. It'd be nice if medal itself was different, but I don't really mind. They are each a memory of something important to me.

And I like cars. Have you watched the movie Hit And Run? It's pretty much a long commercial for GM. Kinda. Really fun movie by the way.

    Okay, that's my two cents.

  5. Up until this year my Al Kayner medals were all exactly the same with different ribbons. The Martian Marathon is kind of the same thing so far (only the medal doubled in size as well).

I have seen Hit and Run. I saw it right before seeing "Silver Linings Playbook," and considering Bradley Coopers previous work (the "Hangover" movies, Will Tippin in Alias, and that) I was wondering what the hell he could have possibly done to earn an Oscar nomination, but he really brought it in SLP. I was kind of shocked he could maintain that level through an entire film.

Loved "Hit & Run." Sure it's cheesy and tacky, but the dialogue was outstandingly clever in its inappropriate humor. I know it was an overwhelming success, but I'd like to see Dax Shepard try to write another movie. I can't buy it as a GM commercial, though, when the featured car is a Lincoln Continental.

Other than that, I pretty much love Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell. In my mind they are America's royal couple no matter what anyone says. I also didn't realize until fairly recently that they are also both from Michigan. So that just endears me to them more.

...and yes Detroit still, sort of, makes (some) cars.
